Steel Roofs –

Shedding Snow

Many folks think that steel roofs are the way to go because of their snow-shedding capabilities.  This can be a positive but can also be a huge negative.  Since many environmental situations don’t allow snow to shed right away, large amounts may be allowed to pile up.  So first, let’s look at the safety side.  When snow releases it usually does so over a very large area, if not the whole side of the roof.  If there is someone, or something, under it, it may not end well.  Second, the less thought about structural impact is the offset load placed on the roof system if only one side releases.  Most trusses built to today’s standards have an offset load figured into their design but rafter systems most likely do not.  Third, snow is usually released due to a melting event and becomes very dense when it hits the ground making it very difficult to remove.
