Tidbits from the Top
Horizontal Foam
Placement of foam horizontally around the perimeter of a slab is not only an integral part of a “shallow frost foundation” but is arguably the most important. Frost will travel at an angle under a building up to roughly thirty degrees. The placement of horizontal foam angled down and away from the building retains some of the lost heat from the building, restricts the intrusion of the cold air from above, and diverts water away. By extending this “warmed area” away from the building, it is difficult for the frost to travel under the slab; therefore, minimizing or even eliminating movement due to frost.
