Truss Energy

Heels

You may have heard the term “energy heel”, but do you know what it means?  The end of a truss, where it sits on the wall of a building, is commonly called a heel.  The term “energy heel” refers to increasing the distance between the bottom of the bottom cord and the top of the top cord of the truss at that location.  The reason for doing this is to create more room for insulation.  Standard heels do not allow enough insulation to keep the ceiling/wall corner warm enough in a heated structure.  This is commonly indicated by a discolored corner seen from within the building and leads to condensation issues and eventually, mold.
