Garages Vs. Pole Buildings

Maybe you haven’t given it much thought but there are huge differences between traditional garages and pole buildings (aka: agricultural buildings or ag buildings for short). These differences show up in everything from materials, machinery used, crew skills and code requirements. A garage typically is constructed on a concrete floor, has 2”x4” or 2”x6” walls at 16” on-center, a sheeted truss system, and many siding options. A pole building does not require a concrete floor, utilizes poles sunk in the ground for structural support, typical truss spacing is 9’ on-center with purlins connecting them, and is sheeted with ribbed steel on both the walls and roof. The general rule is if you are housing very large equipment like farm tractors and implements needing very high walls, large indoor space, and no need for a floor, side towards a pole building. Every other need should start by looking a traditional garage.
