Tidbits from the Top
Private Locates
So, Gopher State One Call or Diggers Hotline has been called and has been to your site, so everything is good-to-go right? Not necessarily. Those locate services will only mark the utilities up to the meter. Many homes have their electrical meter located on a power pole well away from the house. The wire from the meter to the house is considered “private” and will NOT be marked. The same is true with gas and communication lines. A company which specializes in locating private lines should be called to identify where these lines are to minimize damage to people and property. If a private, unmarked utility line is struck during the site preparation process, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to have it repaired. If there is a chance that a private utility could be in the area where the new building will be placed, it is highly recommended that a private locate be done.
