Block Openings – Garage & Service Doors

The space required to install garage doors and service doors, when block is present, is not the size of the door.  We require garage doors to have a block opening 4 ½” larger than the door width which means a 16’ garage door needs an opening of 16’ 4 ½”.  This additional space allows for a 1 ½” framing member and a ¾” jamb on each side of the door so the garage door rail has room and the ability to be fastened.  A service door requires 2” more than the door size which means a 36” door needs an opening of 38”.  This space allows room for adjusting and shimming of the door for proper operation.
