Improper Venting – Attics
Properly venting an attic is a very important step to ensure the building’s longevity and safety of its inhabitants. If the building is insulated and finished on the inside, the air in the attic must be exchanged to ensure the hot, moist air is replaced with air with a much lower relative humidity to eliminate the properties that encourage the formation of mold. Uncycled attic air with high humidity creates big problems during the winter. As the hot, moist air enters the attic from the conditioned space below, the moisture condenses in the form of frost and clings to the roof sheathing and insulation. When the space warms due to outside temperature changes or the sun warming the roof, the frost melts and saturates the insulation which in turn moves to ceiling and wall cavities.
